The Irvington Public School’s science program from Pre-K through grade 12 offers students a solid foundation from which to build as they continue their lives following high school. Our world is increasingly dependent upon science and technology and it is of great importance that our students be scientifically literate so they may compete in the global workforce. In 2012, a report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology projects a need for approximately one million more STEM professionals than the U.S. will produce at the current rate over the next decade if the country is to retain its historical preeminence in science and technology.

Kindergarten – Grade 8 Science Program
In grades K-8, students participate in an integrated science program that exposes students to topics within the physical sciences, life sciences, and Earth and space sciences each year. The New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Science, based on the Next Generation Science Standards, provide a comprehensive, aligned, and developmentally appropriate approach to learning science. The science program is focused on moving students toward a deeper and richer understanding of scientific concepts and their application by engaging students in authentic, relevant learning experiences.
IMPORTANT: All New Jersey public school students in Grades 5 and 8 participate in State testing in Science. This test is administered by the New Jersey Department of Education. This comprehensive and integrated science exam is taken online in May of each year.
High School Science Program
At Irvington High School there is a diverse and growing menu of courses that offer unique learning experiences to complement student interests and prepare them for graduation. Students have several options at Irvington High School, including discipline-oriented tracks, AP and Honors level courses, and full and half-year elective courses. Courses available include Integrated Science, Earth Systems and Space Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering I, Engineering II, Climatology & Meteorology, and Forensic Science. Honors level designations are offered in most of these courses. Students seeking additional challenges are encouraged to enroll in an AP course such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science following the successful completion of the pre-requisite course(s).

High School Graduation requirements mandate that students take at least 15 credits of science that includes laboratory biology along with two additional science courses such as chemistry, environmental science, physics, or other laboratory/inquiry-based science.
