“Dare to Dream Big Dreams”

“First, think. Second, believe. Third, dream. And finally, dare.”
― Walt Disney

Welcome to Florence Avenue Elementary School, Home of the Falcons! I am honored to serve as Principal of a diverse community of learners! It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that the Florence Avenue staff members work with the parents and students of Florence Avenue School. In collaboration with a prepared and focused staff, a committed group of parents, and engaged scholars, we will endeavor to provide a quality education for all our scholars!

Florence Avenue Elementary School is where we “Dare to Dream Big Dreams!” With a population of over 600 students, and a devoted staff, we strive to build a community of scholars, where all of our stakeholders work to instill a love of learning in all of our students. Further, we will work diligently to provide quality education for every child, in a safe, nurturing environment. In order to achieve this end, we will work to build a strong partnership with parents and the community at large.

Elementary years are a crucial time for developing the skills for lifelong learning and thus, it is our pledge to adapt our instruction, when necessary, to meet the needs of our diverse community of learners. Moreover, we will achieve excellence in instruction by constantly learning to refine and reflect on our practices. We believe that as we challenge ourselves and our students, we will intently remove boundaries toward academic achievement for all of our scholars.

Here at Florence Avenue School, we aim to provide our scholars with 21st Century skills and competencies in both academics and the arts. Through our uncompromising focus towards rigorous, purposeful and engaging instruction in Math, Social Studies, Science and English Language Arts, coupled with study of the Fine Arts and World Language, we are determined to create self-directed learners, with diverse experiences, and learning infused with technology. With the assistance and support of the Irvington Board of Education, our curriculum is undergirded with specialized services such as English Language Learners and Bilingual classes, Special Education and Intellectually Gifted programs.

Recognizing our responsibility to build the right moral compass, a sense of community, values and positive disposition, that leads to the character that will help our scholars to succeed at every level, we offer a multi-faceted character education program. This is established on the tenets of good character and promotes positive self-esteem and awareness, and is executed through classroom instruction, school assemblies, school leadership council, student council, P.T.A., and we will continue in the 2016-2017 school year, grade level morning assemblies. These various components cumulatively promote the culture and community of humanitarianism here at Florence Avenue School.

Lastly, I encourage all stakeholders to participate in the P.T.A. and the monthly “Meet and Greet the Principal.” Both are student focused organization/meetings that provide a venue for all community members to contribute to the advancement of the scholars here at Florence Avenue School. It yields powerful and purposeful relationships between home, school and the wider Florence Avenue School community. Together we will teach our children to dare to “Dream Big Dreams!”
