Welcome to Union Avenue Middle School, Home of the Eagles!
It is with great excitement and deep gratitude that I introduce myself as the newly appointed Principal of Union Avenue Middle School. My name is Mrs. Shakeena Hill-Simpson, and I am truly honored to lead this incredible school community. After proudly serving as Assistant Principal from 2019 to 2024, I step into this new role with over 20 years of experience in education and an unwavering commitment to the academic, social, and emotional success of every scholar.
Union Avenue Middle School is home to more than 700 remarkable scholars, and we are continually inspired by their energy, potential, and perseverance. This year, we proudly embrace our schoolwide theme: “Rise Together with Respect, Resilience, and Results.” These values will guide our collective efforts as we focus on closing achievement gaps, elevating academic performance, and preparing our scholars for success in high school and far beyond. Together, we will foster a culture of excellence where every scholar is empowered to thrive.
At the heart of our vision is a strong commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and nurturing learning environment—one that embraces diversity and nurtures curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. Our goal is to ensure that every scholar is not only academically prepared but also equipped with the confidence and character to lead and contribute to a better world.
To support this vision, Union Avenue Middle School offers a comprehensive and enriching academic program designed to both challenge and inspire. Our 9-period schedule includes core instruction in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, along with a wide range of engaging electives. Scholars have opportunities to explore Spanish, French, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, Instrumental and Vocal Music, and Physical Education—courses that encourage self-expression, talent development, and a love for learning.
Our classrooms are vibrant, interactive spaces where learning is personalized and meaningful. Through cross-curricular connections, small group instruction, and ongoing progress monitoring, we tailor our approach to meet the individual learning needs of each scholar. This ensures all scholars are supported, challenged, and motivated to reach their highest potential.
Character education is deeply embedded in our school culture. Through the implementation of our Positive Behavior Support in Schools (PBSIS) framework, we promote and celebrate behaviors that reflect integrity, respect, and resilience. We recognize scholars who demonstrate academic excellence and strong character through achievements such as Honor Roll, National Junior Honor Society, Perfect Attendance, and other school-wide acknowledgments.
We also believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, scholars will have opportunities to participate in field trips, experiential learning activities, monthly assemblies, pep rallies, and community-building events that make learning exciting and relevant. These experiences help scholars make real-world connections and develop a broader perspective on the world around them.
To our scholars: We cannot wait to learn, grow, and celebrate with you this year. Your success is our purpose, and we are here to support you every step of the way. You are the reason we rise together.
To our families and community members: We extend a heartfelt invitation to partner with us on this journey. Your voice, ideas, and involvement are essential as we work together to provide the best possible experience for every scholar. We are eager to listen, collaborate, and build lasting relationships that strengthen our school community.
Together, we will continue to build a school where every scholar is known, supported, and celebrated!
Thank you and let’s have an amazing school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shakeena Hill-Simpson
