Mathematics K-5

At Irvington Public Schools, we believe that all scholars can do mathematics.

The goal of the K–5 Mathematics Program is for every scholar to develop the essential understandings, skills, and habits of mind needed to succeed in more advanced mathematics and to apply their mathematical knowledge to the world around them.  Our comprehensive program engages all scholars in standards-based curricula, rigorous instruction, and authentic assessments aligned to the 2023 New Jersey Student Learning Standards – Mathematics (NJSLS-Mathematics).  We value strong partnerships with parents and families, as collaboration between home and school plays a vital role in supporting each scholar’s success in mathematics.

In the mathematics classroom, we maintain a balanced focus on conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity.  To support this, we use
enVision® Mathematics, a nationally recognized program that engages scholars in problem-based learning, visual learning, and rich mathematical discourse to foster deep conceptual understanding.  Through hands-on modeling with manipulatives, visual representations, and collaborative discussions, scholars are encouraged to share their thinking in multiple ways and engage in accountable math talk.

Classroom lessons follow a gradual release model of instruction and include embedded differentiated supports during whole-group instruction and targeted small-group instruction to ensure the curriculum is accessible to all.  We also use i-Ready, an online diagnostic and intervention program, to personalize learning and support each scholar’s path toward grade-level success.  Through these experiences, our scholars are empowered to grow as independent thinkers and confident problem-solvers.

As Supervisor of Mathematics K–5, I am committed to ensuring high-quality mathematics curriculum, programs, and instruction that meet the diverse needs of our scholars and promote continuous improvement in mathematics achievement.
