Principal’s Welcome Message – BKA 2019-2020

Welcome to the Blue Knights Academy where our mission is to “Motivate, Educate and Empower every student to achieve success academically, grow socially and emotionally, and be equipped to enter college or career confidently. At BKA, we strive to educate each student holistically, ensuring they graduate high school prepared for life as adults.

In so doing, BKA’s focus is in fostering a small learning environment where students, who have experienced difficulties in the traditional high school setting can receive greater attention, support, and nurturing from faculty and staff members. Thereby, each student can build confidence, acquire skills, meet district and state requirements and ultimately experience success.

While BKA is an alternative school, the academic criteria is strictly adhered to. Students must acquire 125 credits and pass the state mandated exams to graduate.  BKA provides students with a strong college preparatory course of study combined with an equally strong humanistic approach in a setting that fosters students’ personal and academic growth.

Students who enter BKA are usually referred from Irvington High School because of problematic behavior, poor attendance, and/or poor academic performance. Most students are overage and under-credited. Thus, BKA focuses on meeting the needs of those students who, for a variety of reasons, have difficulty within, or have rejected, the traditional high school program.

BKA offers programs and activities to support student growth including:

  • Daily Convocation- to set the tone and highlight student accomplishments
  •  Clubs and Activities- to provide additional opportunities for student self-expression
  • Service Learning and volunteerism- to encourage students to “give back” to the school district and community.
  • Field Trips, Assemblies and presentations- to expose students to colleges, careers, resources and programs that go beyond the school setting.

Beginning this year, BKA will operate during the day as opposed to the evening. This transition brings new opportunities for students such as the eligibility to participate in high school sports. Also, while BKA has always encouraged and have assisted students in finding employment, transitioning to a day program will allow students to find more traditional jobs reserved for teens and young adults.

In conclusion, the starting point is not as important as the finish line. At BKA, our students may start and experience poor performance in schools; however, we ensure that they finish high school as a graduate of the Irvington Public Schools. On average 80% of Blue Knights Academy students graduate high school with the majority graduating in four years despite previous failures.

So it is possible to experience academic success, social emotional growth and build confidence for the future. To that goal we say: “Make it Count!”
